Newsletter November 2016- January 2017

Feeding the Spirit, Educating the Mind, Preserving the Community

Big "Thank you" to our Board for their committment of time, talents and treasures to Flint Hill Farm Educational Center, Inc.  The Board can report 100% financial support for the year 2016.

This year has been a year of new endeavors!

1.  Thanks to the devoted Event Committee Leaders FHFED hosted an AMAZING Farm to Table Spring HOEDOWN.  The excellent menu was created and prepared under the direction of Executive Chef Michael Brack-LVHN Sodexo, also a member of our Board. We were blessed to have the assistance of our friends from the LCTI culinary program, Chef John Middleton, Chef Daniel Lieber for the Spring event.  A BIG thank you to all!!

2. 2016 was a time of transition for our Blacksmith shop into a year round all purpose room.  October saw the closing in of the big barn doors on the Blacksmith Shop, insulation and installation of a man door that would allow wheelchair access to the Blacksmith shop.  The installation of a wood burning stove and chimney was competed in November 3015.  Spring 2016 welcomed new windows, shutters and facelift painting through volunteer hours and generous donations. Addition of AV equipment, benches for student seating, additional electricial outlets and ceiling fan came throughout the summer and fall.  The solar room is almost completed that will be outfitted with a hydroponic growing demostration for local school students and visitors and the kitchen/demo area is presently under construction.  Although it still under construction, the room can be used by groups year round since the wood burning stove provides plenty of heat to keep the area warm and toasty.  Groups of 30 have been confortably be accommodated.

3. Tours and visitors for this year ( schools, homeschoolers, scout troops, day-care centers, OPEN HOUSE and farm store families) totaled over 3000!  We are blessed to have a continued outreach to our community.  Please tell your teachers about our tour packages!

4. Volunteer, Andrea Hatfield, student from Lehigh University Grad School expanded our tour content and created a worksheet for teachers to document the student experience as meeting the PA Standards for Agriculture and Society.  Andrea and Hanna Walker ran an extremely successful summer camp.  Thank you to you both!

5. Ph.D. candidate Farah Vallera completed her "on farm" portion of her Doctoral Thesis at Flint Hill Farm ED Center with the Mosser Elementary 4th and 5th grades, March 2015.  Congratulations Farah!  She is now Dr. Vallera!.

We want to give a warm thank you to all the summer staff and volunteers who help to make Flint Hill Farm Educational Center a great experience for all ages this past summer season and we are already making plans for the 2016 summer camps and tours. Please visit the Summer Camp page for dates and times!

Please remember that  all donations and the payments we collect when you purchase our farm store products go toward paying upcoming hay bills and monthly feed, assist our school scholarships and allow us to extend our outreach to our community.

Our animals greatly appreciate your kindness.  Visit our Farmer's Markets for fall at Lower Saucon on Sunday's starting up again in May 2017!
